How does OCR work?

OCR (optical character recognition) looks at pixels that form letters and guesses the characters.

Pixels, not understanding
OCR classifies shapes. It does not know that a line is an address or that a number is an amount due. That is why 0/O and 1/l swaps are common, and why you must proofread figures before you paste them into a tax form.
A PDF that already has a text layer does not need OCR — copy from PDF to TXT instead. OCR is for photos and scans that are pictures of words.
Language packs
An English model looking at Arabic script produces garbage, and the reverse is also true. Mixed ID cards need the bilingual page so both models run. Handwriting, cursive logos, and stamped ink are still unreliable; typewritten or laser-printed pages work best.
