How to redact a PDF

Account numbers, addresses, and IDs should not travel with a file you send outside your team.
Redact PDF on A2Z Edit covers sensitive regions so they are not visible in the downloaded copy. Blur tools are for images—use redaction for PDF text and regions.
Redaction means the sensitive pixels and text are gone from the file you send. Drawing a black rectangle in a word processor often leaves the original text sitting underneath, selectable and searchable. Do not use that shortcut for IDs, medical notes, or bank letters.
How to redact a PDF
- Open Redact PDF on A2Z Edit.
- Upload the PDF that contains private details.
- Mark the regions or text that must be hidden.
- Apply redactions and review every marked area.
- Download the redacted PDF and confirm nothing sensitive remains readable.

Proper redaction protects people and organizations when documents leave a trusted circle.
Tips
- Redact headers, footers, and footnotes—secrets hide there too.
- Also strip PDF metadata so author fields do not leak names.
- For photos of documents, blur or pixelate on the image tool, then convert to PDF if needed.
What to mark
Look at headers, footers, stamps, QR codes, and the reverse of ID cards. Account numbers hide in tiny print. Metadata can still carry an author name after the page looks clean — strip PDF metadata as a second pass.
If a whole page is unnecessary, remove the page. Redacting every line on a sheet you should not send is wasted work.
Images vs PDFs
Photos of documents belong on Blur / pixelate (image), then convert to PDF if the portal wants a PDF. Native PDFs belong on Redact PDF. Mixing those tools up is how people “black out” a screenshot in a PDF viewer and still leak the text layer.
After you download, try selecting text over the black bars and zoom in. If you can copy the secret, it is not redacted.
Frequently asked questions
Is drawing a black box enough?
Use a real redaction tool. Simple overlays in some editors can still leave text selectable underneath.
Can I blur a PDF instead?
Blur on A2Z Edit is image-only. For PDFs, use Redact PDF.
Should I remove pages instead?
If an entire page is unnecessary, removing it is cleaner than redacting every line.
