JPG vs PNG

JPG (JPEG) shines for photographs; PNG shines for UI, screenshots, and transparency.

Transparency
JPG cannot store an alpha channel. If you flatten a PNG logo to JPG, the checkerboard becomes a solid color (usually white). Keep PNG or WebP when the subject must sit on arbitrary backgrounds.
