By Waleed Sheeraz, independent operator of A2Z Edit · Updated 2026-09-09

PNG is the workhorse for lossless UI assets; WebP can offer smaller files with lossy or lossless modes.

Steps

  1. Keep PNG masters for editing and transparency-critical logos.
  2. Export WebP for web delivery when size matters.
  3. Compare edges and flat colors after conversion.
  4. Fall back to PNG if a tool mishandles WebP alpha.
  5. Compress only after you like the look.

Why it matters

Shipping lighter UI images improves page weight without redrawing assets.

Tips

  • Icons sometimes compress better as optimized PNG or SVG depending on complexity.
  • Do not convert screenshots back and forth casually.
  • Strip metadata on public marketing assets.

Graphics, not photographs

PNG is the lossless default for UI, screenshots, and logos. WebP can be smaller in lossless or lossy mode and still keep alpha. Confirm the CMS actually serves WebP before you delete the PNG master.

Print RIPs and some email clients still want PNG. Keep SVG as the vector master when you have one; PNG and WebP are the raster deliveries.
