How to Convert JPG to PNG

- PNG from a photo is often larger than the original JPG — compress or switch to WebP for web delivery.
- For transparency, start from a cutout PNG; a normal JPG has no alpha channel to recover.
What this conversion cannot do
A JPG has already discarded high-frequency detail and never stored transparency. Saving it as PNG freezes the current pixels in a lossless container. It does not sharpen a muddy photo or punch a hole through the background.
If you need a cutout, run Remove Background on a copy, then export PNG. If you need a smaller web file, prefer JPG to WebP or Compress Image instead of PNG.
When PNG is still the right output
Some editors, printers, and government forms still list PNG in the accept list and reject JPEG. Design tools that will composite the photo later also prefer not to add another JPEG save.
Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG. That is normal. Compress or convert to WebP after you finish editing if the destination is a website.

Will JPG to PNG improve quality?
It preserves current pixels without a new JPEG pass. It cannot restore detail already lost to earlier compression.
