How to Remove an Image Background

Transparent subjects drop cleanly onto slides, storefronts, and social templates.

Browser-side processing avoids uploading personal photos to a remote editor.

Product shots on a table, a person standing in front of a wall, a logo on a plain slide, and most pet portraits are the easy cases. High contrast between the subject and the backdrop matters more than megapixels.

If the subject is a single object with a clear silhouette, you will usually get a usable cutout in one pass. You can then drop a solid color or a replacement image behind it, or download a transparent PNG.

Fine hair against a busy street, glass bottles, smoke, mesh, and subjects that match the background color are the usual failures. The model guesses a matte; it does not understand every material.

When the edge looks chewed, try a simpler photo, crop tighter around the subject, or accept a solid replacement color that hides fringe. A desktop mask in Photoshop or GIMP is still the right tool for catalog work that will be printed at large size.

Processing stays in the tab. The model file is large (tens of megabytes) so the first run on a phone can pause while it caches. That download is the engine, not your photo.

Do not treat a cutout as anonymization. Clothing, rooms, and reflections can still identify someone. For IDs and documents, use blur or PDF redaction on the sensitive pixels, not background removal.
